It's Easier Than You Think to Remove Lipstick From Clothes

Prevention is Best

If possible, it is easiest to try to avoid lipstick stains altogether. For instance, try to apply makup after dressing, so your clothes don"t have to come in contact with your makeup. Wearing a drape when applying makeup can also prevent problems.

Determine the Type of Stain

Often lipstick stains aren"t noticed for hours or days. By then they have set in and need special treatment.  It is much easier to remove lipstick from clothes when they are fresh and treatment is done immediately.

Read the Garment Label

Before trying to remove lipstick from clothes, read the label.  Some fabrics have to be dry cleaned and stain removal should only be done by a professional.  Most other fabrics  can be treated at home, using a variety of techniques.

Choose a Professional Product or Home Remedy to Remove the Stain

There are professional products which do a good job of removing lipstick stains.  Some of the best include Motsenbocker"s Lift Off #2, Xenit and Kleen-Touch. If you prefer a home remedy, there are also several methods to choose from:

*Moisten a clean white cloth with alcohol and blot the stain until it disappears.

*Dab a little grease fighting dishwashing detergent, such as Dawn or Sunlight, on the stain and let it set for around 10 minutes.  Work the stain from the outside edges in.

*Ammonia also works to remove Lipstick from clothes, is inexpensive, and common in most households. With this method the stain should be blotted with plain water first, then a cotton swab dipped in ammonia can be dabbed at it. The garment can then be washed in warm soapy water with Dawn dishwashing detergent.

*Hairspray is the classic standby stain remover people have been using for years.  Just spray the stain and let it set for around 10 to 15 minutes.  The stain can then be wiped away with just a clean cloth moistened in warm water.
